9/4/2023 0 Comments Nightingale supper club![]() The latter is hoping "to bring a little of Berlin to Blighty" but, while the show pays homage to Kander and Ebb's Cabaret, it lacks its ability to interweave politics and pizzazz, and lapses into a buttonholing earnestness: lest we miss the point, we are told no fewer than three times that homosexual males in wartime were dubbed "the enemy within". Just as we are getting interested in the meteoric rise of a cockney nurse who becomes singing star Miss Nightingale, the focus switches to the tortured, clandestine affair between her aristocratic patron and her Polish-Jewish songwriter. But the two aims keep coming into conflict. The show's aim is clearly twofold: to evoke the raffish supper-club world of 1942 London and to explore the problems faced by gay men in wartime. While I admire his energy, I wish he could have found a collaborator: he certainly knows how to write a song, but his libretto leaves a lot to be desired. These are largely family-owned establishments that believe in old-fashioned hospitality, slow-paced dining, and good scratch cooking. M atthew Bugg has written the book and lyrics, composed the score and also directed this late-night chamber musical.
